Video Game Golf Club: Wasteland Review
Golf Club: Wasteland (2021) is a golf game in an unusual setting. You play on an earth decimated by an environmental catastrophe. Through beautiful visuals and eerie audio, you piece together what has happened to the planet to cause such devastation. It's an unusual way to tell a story, but one that combines 2D golfing and a surprisingly moving narrative about loss, loneliness, regret and an indictment of capitalism and corporate greed.

Our examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked Golf Club: Wasteland 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 13 months ago.

Golf Club: Wasteland is a golf game in an unusual setting.

As the earth descended into climate crisis chaos, the ultra-rich move to Tesla City on Mars, and only come back to earth for rounds of golf. You play Charlie who, after ferrying the rich to Mars, decides to come back for one last game. Through diary entries, music and radio interviews, you begin to understand the impact of the change on those who survived; their longings and regrets, and through the scenery and locations, you begin to get a clearer picture of the annihilation of humanity on earth.

Against this backdrop, the golfing is a satisfyingly simple and controllable affair. You decide the angle and power of your shot and aim to get the ball in the hole in as few shots as possible. You play in abandoned museums, on rooftops, cruise ships, and more.

It's a unique and haunting experience that avoids the finger-wagging and blame usually accompanying conversations about the environment. Instead, we sit with the sad loneliness of the situation and the deep desire to return home even if that comes with the ultimate cost. It deals with these themes in a nuanced, introspective, and subtle way that is sure to provoke thought and conversation in those who play it.
