Play OverviewPlay Overview

Graveyard Keeper (2018) is a funeral-themed role-playing game where you are the caretaker of a local cemetery. You make choices about how to lay out the plot, what services to offer and generally how to make money from your unusual enterprise. The pixilated visuals and simple aesthetic hide within a complex and intriguing world of looking after the dead.

After being hit by a car you wake up in a medieval world where you are in charge of the local cemetery and church. You must manage the graveyard to the best of your abilities in the hope of gaining the magic to open the portal back to your real life.

Play is a twist on farming, where you toil your land not for a food crop but to efficiently store and settle the dead in their graves. The plot is overrun with boulders, trees, stumps, and weeds, that you clear to make space for the dead.

As you progress this work you earn money from the locals whilst also taking on missions to help with their lives - bringing them some crafted or collectable items like oil, honey etc. It soon becomes clear you can't keep up with the labour manually and you unlock new technologies to automate the processes you undertake to run the graveyard.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for Use of alcohol/tobacco and Drugs. This game contains instances of sexual innuendo. In one example, the player character talks to a witch about ‘enlarging’ his ‘carrot’, which the witch misunderstands to mean his genitalia. The two characters go back and forth in a comical way until she finally understands the literal meaning. This game also contains the use of bad language, including ‘b*!%h’, ‘s$@t’, ‘b*!%$@d’, ‘goddamn’, and ‘b*!%$y’. As the game revolves around a graveyard keeper, the player must prepare bodies before burying them. The corpses themselves are just silhouettes of a body under a sheet; however, when interacted with on the autopsy table, there will be a selection of icons resembling parts such as fat, skin, heart, intestines and brain. The images have a 2D art style, without detailed gore. Flesh harvested from bodies can be cooked and consumed. This game contains non-realistic violence towards fantasy characters, as well as minor violence towards human characters. Players will fight monsters that recoil backwards when hit, and their health bar depletes. They disappear when defeated. Similarly, when the player character (a human) is hit, their health bar will deplete but there is no reaction to damage. There is also a scene where an accused witch is burnt at the stake. She is wearing a sack over her head. When the fire is lit, the character does not react and remains completely still, and also doesn’t make any noise. The fire burns and then suddenly disappears with a pile of ash and some bones being left in its place.

Rated for younger players in the US. ESRB TEEN for Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Similar to Stardew Valley, you need to deal with organising your graveyard business and interacting with characters. Additionally, you can automate some processes which are more complex than the simpler farming games.
