Play Overview
Grim Fandango Remastered (1998) is a point and click adventure. Set in the Mexican Land of the Dead, you are Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the recently deceased. After struggling to earn enough commission you steal a virtuous client from a colleague and stumble into a conspiracy involving stolen tickets, gangsters, and revolutionaries. Inspired by movies of the 40s and Mexican traditions (think Casablanca meets Coco) this classic adventure is remastered with an optional directors commentary.
Gameplay involves clicking around (or using sticks) to move your character about the scene, talk to characters while examining and collecting useful objects to solve puzzles and progress the story. The game is divided into 4 years, each section taking place in a different part of the Land of the Dead as Manny makes his way to the Next World.
Some of the puzzles are devious and may involve trial and error, while others are straightforward. If you get stuck there are plenty of walkthrough instructions on the Internet, though the joy of these types of games is to work out what to do yourself.
Grim Fandango is a narrative game that plays out as an interactive movie, and although it has been remastered it retains a retro feel. It is a genre of game you do not see very often today, from a studio that specialised in these types of games (LucasArts) that sadly no longer exists. A nostalgia hit for those who played it decades ago, or a new experience for others.

Age Ratings
Although in a horror setting, with all the characters as skeletons, this is not a horror title. There is no blood and gore, the violence is mild and cartoon-like. The language used is fitting for the low-life characters but is not excessive or strong. The ratings are reflective of certain triggers that require a higher rating such as characters smoking cigars, and gameplay taking place in bars and casinos.
Skill Level
12+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Requires lateral thinking and perseverance. Mature players will get more out of this due to the popular culture references of a bygone age, but it is not necessary to be familiar with Film Noir to enjoy the story.
