Play Overview
Knights And Bikes (2019)! is a hand-painted adventure in a fictional late-eighties British Isles. You work together as Nessa and Demelza who explore its coast on bikes to find treasure, mystery and trouble. There’s fighting with frisbees, water balloons, tape cassettes and puddle-stomping. And as you explore the island, you acquire new abilities. As the two heroes encounter an adult world, it’s their ingenuity, friendship and wide-eyed wonder that guide the adventure.
The game combines an imaginative childhood world with classic coming-of-age films like The Goonies. Things are kept light but include a moving backstory of the passing of one of the character's mother and the journey to come to terms with that in the family.
As you progress, you take the two friends on a mysterious adventure; talking to locals, exploring each location and collecting items to progress the story. Slowly you uncover what is going on in your home town, but also the interior life of the two protagonists.
The game also has a series of books by Gabrielle Kent that expands the world and character of the island, while taking Nessa and Demelza on new adventures. In addition, there is an animated cartoon in the works and you can download a recipe to make the cream tea you have in the game.
The result is a fun adventure that has the feel of a Saturday morning cartoon show. Taking charge of either Nessa or Demelza and exploring the island on their bike is an entertaining and well-observed recreation of backwater holiday destinations.
