Play OverviewPlay Overview

Melon Sandbox (2022) (previously Melon Playground) is a simulation game where you use puppets to tell stories and create vignettes that often have gruesome twists or graphic injuries. You pick and position different objects, each with its own physics and properties, to create theatrical scenarios for the test-dummy characters. It's a game where you can tell stories and make theatre, but also stands out for its realistic injury simulation that often dominates the play.

You place the different every day (and no-so-everyday) objects, each with their own physics and properties, to create often fatal scenarios for your characters. Although not aiming to be photo-realistic, any injuries to characters as part of the play stand out for how graphic they are.

In this way, you can create vignettes by clicking and dragging different objects into the small game arena. Every object has a set of properties that determine how it interacts with anything in the world. The characters can be animated by moving their limbs and heads with the touch screen. This makes it a rich canvas for all sorts of storytelling.

The result is a sandbox system where any story is possible. The level of simulation invites imagination and creativity. However, although the simulation of violence and injury is part of the attraction to children, parents should check the game out first.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for Moderate Violence.

User-Generated Content: This game includes content created by other players, such as maps, outfits and items, that are not reflected in the game rating.

The nature of the game, although simple and cartoon-like, means that it depicts shooting, stabbing, burning, poisoning, tearing, vaporising and crushing. These injuries are depicted with rag-doll physics made more disturbing by added realism. For example, if you shoot someone you see blood, flesh and brain matter along with other bodily injuries.

Melon Playground is rated 17+ on Apple App Store for Frequent/Intense Fear Themes and Realistic Violence.
This game includes adverts on some platforms that are watched to unlock additional content. Note that these adverts are not covered by the age rating and may include older-rated content.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Younger players can create the scenes and experiment with different objects. Again, this requires considerable maturity to cope with the violence and parents should check the game first.

CostsCosts

There are the following additional costs associated with this game:
  • In-Game Purchases: Additional in-game purchases are offered for items that enhance the experience.
  • Advertising: Smartphone or Tablet version of this game includes adverts. This varies in form but watching ads is often incentivised by unlocking additional content and progress in the game. Note that these are not covered by the age rating and may include older-rated content.

You can pay real money to turn off advert for 1 week.
