Play OverviewPlay Overview

Red Ronin (2021) is an action dash-and-slash game where a bloodthirsty ronin and her computer companion are out for revenge. Play is a series of turn-based decisions about which direction to dash or attack next. It stands out for its gory fights that feel surprisingly fast-paced for a turn-based game.

After a betrayal, Red sets out with her companion bot to take revenge on those who left her behind. One by one, turn by turn, she aims to kill them all. You move your character around the grid-based levels aiming to take down each enemy character in your way. The catch is that you can only dash until you hit an obstacle and if there's an enemy next to you when you stop, they kill you.

As you progress you learn how to traverse the stages without getting killed. The enemies only move and attack when you move. The game turns into more of a puzzle than a combat challenge. Dealing with enemies that need more than one hit, or avoiding traps all adds to the puzzle. You can pick up some special abilities that help, like rewinding time for double attacks, but really this is a brain game you solve by tactical thinking.

The result is a gory game that challenges your brain as much as your reactions.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for strong violence. While there are some moderate blood effects and some enemies are seen to be sliced in half or decapitated, the violence is shown from a distance and the visuals have a simple pixel-art style. Therefore, the violence and any associated injuries are neither visually detailed nor realistic looking. The PEGI criteria at 16 state that there may be “Depictions of arcade-style … action showing violence containing blood or gore” and that “Arcade style action refers mostly to 2D effect depictions where the characters move left and right to attack each other”. The violence is insufficiently strong, visually detailed, or realistic to meet the PEGI 18 criteria for gross violence.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB TEEN for Blood and Violence.
The game's combat is frequently violent and consists in slicing people apart so, may not be appropriate for all audiences.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. Players need to be able to think ahead and cope with multiple systems at the same time. The geographically strategic aspect of the game is made less pressured because it's turn-based.
