Play OverviewPlay Overview

Selaco (2024) is a shooter game with a focus on fast movement and staged battles in a destructible underground facility. In many ways it's an update of classic fast shooting games like Quake and Doom, but the detail elevates Selaco to be something more than the sum of its parts (or inspirations).

Play is story-driven, but the fun is in the action. You need pin point accuracy to take down the computer enemies. As you do, hitting the environment creates showers of masonry. It's a game that takes this simulation seriously which gives battles a visceral feel as everything is destroyed: broken paintings, smashed tables, screen, chairs, smoke, and chunks of debris.

The enemies are also impressive. There is no sense that these computer competitors are on loops that you can wait to repeat. They are fully aware of your (each other's) presence and work together to take you down. Sometimes this means they back off to a safe distance. Or other-times they take the numbers advantage and push in for the kill.

The result is a game that feels like returning to the high water park of Halo, F.E.A.R and Quake. Whether or not those names mean anything to you, this is an experience you can enjoy for the tactical playground it offers and how each time you come to the table it feels a little different.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Selaco 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Ellen Robertson and updated 3 months ago.

The blood is purple rather than red, but the human-like enemies can be dismembered after they've been shot. Pieces of their body fly off and you are showered in purple blood-like goo. You can also kick their squelchy heads around after they are dead.
