Play OverviewPlay Overview

Simpler Times (2024) is a narrative game about a young woman reminiscing about her childhood as she moves away from home. While you listen to four soulful songs for each period of life, you explore the room and witness her changing interests and desires through the different items, notes, and decorations. It stands out for the low-pressure, meditative reflection on the memories and events that shape you.

You play Taina, a young woman moving out of her childhood home. She's had the same bedroom all her life, and before leaving, she takes some time to reflect on the memories made there. You relive four key moments from the previous ten years, witnessing the changes in her interests and recalling forgotten events that shaped her.

Play involves moving around the bedroom in each of the four time periods. You interact with the objects you find to discover more about that time. You can reread her old notes and diaries, paint pictures, and take pictures on her Polaroid camera. Or just lay back and listen to her old music. There are no time pressures or set objectives, instead letting you focus on reflection and unwinding.

The result is a game that, while simple, offers a meditation on childhood and an escape from the business of day-to-day life to reflect on the memories and experiences that make you you. This is all wrapped up in the four songs that accompany the game to create an intimate and intriguing glimpse into the nature of memory and childhood.
