Play Overview
Taiji (2022) is an adventure game where you solve grid puzzles by toggling tiles on or off. It sounds simple but soon evolves into a complex interwoven challenge. This, combined with the greater meaning of the symbols in the game world make it a challenge that builds to a crescendo.
As you explore the pixelated world you slowly encounter more of these puzzles and piece together what is going on. The novelty is that nothing is kept secret from the start, everything you need to progress (and all the secrets) are hidden in plain sight.
This results in a puzzle game that is on one level really simple. But this consistency of interaction clears the usual guesswork or pixel hunting out of the way. Instead, these are logical challenges that require clear thinking and leaps of insight to solve. As you explore the dense world you always know what you need to do next but must think hard and pay close attention to the vital clues (often right in front of you).
Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Taiji 19 months ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 15 months ago.
