Play OverviewPlay Overview

UnderDungeon (2023) is an action adventure where you play Kimuto, a cat on his first day of a new job at a logistics company. You take on different missions to deliver packages to various characters in the dungeons. It's the tongue-in-cheek take on these classic adventures as much as the pixel-perfect battles that make this stand out.

It's a game that leans into its simple black-and-white visuals with retro dungeon exploring challenges. However, these soon expand beyond the usual baddie-bash affairs. Each mission is an encounter with a different character and requires a different approach. Perhaps you are helping a farmer with an insect problem or getting a sword to an adventurer named Link.

As you progress the array of charismatic characters grows along with your abilities and equipment. You have To progress through the dungeon and get your delivery through you have a variety of ways to defend yourself: Hook shot, magical bubbles, a boomerang cannon or a classic longsword. Each of these can also be upgraded to make them stronger and unlock secret abilities.

The result is a game that plays around with the usual adventure format with tongue-in-cheek humour. It offers a Zelda-like experience but with quirky writing and less predictable challenges than we are used to. Even the perspective and format of the game change.

Rated PEGI 16 for Drugs.

The game includes a simple Casino that has Roulette and Fruit Machines. There are drug references. For example, the character suffers hallucinations from touching some magical crystals. You can also drink alcohol.

We asked the VSC Rating Board for clarification on the Gambling aspect of the game. "To meet the criterion for PEGI 18 Gambling, there would need to be teaching and/or glamorising present. In this case, the roulette wheel is extremely basic, rather than a realistic portrayal of a casino-style roulette wheel. There is nothing useful that’s taught: you simply spin the wheel and see which of the three possible areas it lands on, more like a tombola wheel. As for the slot machine, again it’s very basic and simply a matter of pulling the lever and seeing what you get. There is nothing to learn and no teaching of any skill. While the overall setting is described as a "casino", it’s really a room featuring a mixture of extremely basic mini-games, including a fairground-style shooting gallery, rather than an accurate or realistic depiction of a casino. As such, it doesn’t teach how to gamble or bet, and the basic nature of the games, including the very basic visual style, means it doesn’t glamorise real life betting or gambling. So, we think the existing PEGI 16 is accurate."
