Play OverviewPlay Overview

What Remains of Edith Finch (2017) is a narrative puzzle game about the surviving member of the Finch family, who seems to have died from a curse. From a first-person perspective, you return to the family’s coastal home to learn about each relative’s final hours by exploring their rooms in turn.

From the same team as Unfinished Swan, each character’s story unfolds uniquely in the style of a fable. Exploring every inch of the intricately detailed, cluttered and lived-in house builds a picture of the family that lived there. Sifting fact from fiction is no easy task as the family’s memorialisation of events is often unreliable.

The pieces fit together like a mystery and the house itself holds all this together beautifully, but really the game is a chance to reflect on how families tell their story of home, childhood and parenting. It revels in the glorious peculiarity of life and how we must embrace all of it to be fully alive.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked What Remains of Edith Finch 4 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 4 months ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for moderate violence towards human characters. The game is divided into ‘levels’ that are an exploration of the defining moments of a ‘family member’s life leading to their death. One particular level is viewed, in the 1st person, as an animated comic strip in which some of the characters move and react realistically. Examples of violence include a scene in which an assailant is hit with a walking crutch, he loses his balance and falls over a stair bannister rail and lands on the floor below.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB TEEN for Blood, Drug Reference, Violence, Language.

Skill Level

14+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. Exploring the different rooms, investigating the family history as well as completing the different puzzle challenges make this a good fit for teenagers.
