Games create space that invites you to experience what it feels like to be someone else. Whether on your own or with others, this inevitably frames conversations about what you have experienced.
Inspired by the Methodist Church's use of their Conversations Against Mundanity game as a vehicle to make space for Real Talk about Identify, Belief and Taboos, this is a list of board games and video games that not only take us to interesting and important topics but offer a context to speak honestly about them.
These are games that offer experiences that stay with us, and that we continue talking about with each other long after playing. Games that say something real and true about life, in the categories of the Conversations Against Mundanity card game:
- Confessions - What’s the stuff we do or think that we don’t usually talk about?
- Identity - What makes us who we are and what does it mean to be us in the world?
- Beliefs - What do we actually believe – about the world, about faith and religion, about divisive subjects?
- Taboo - What are the things we never say about sex, relationships and bodies that we could do with speaking out loud?
- Choices - What power do we have to make choices that have an impact on ourselves and others?
