Play Overview
In Other Waters (2020) is an underwater exploration game where you play an Artificial Intelligence assistant to a stranded xenobiologist in a mysterious alien ocean. The world is not seen except through the instrumentation available to you. This creates a non-violent (yet disturbing and slightly horrific) sci-fi story where you enter a world of wonder, fear and vulnerability, unravelling the history and ecology of an impossible planet. What will you discover together?
The game is navigated through the elegant, intuitive interface using the touch screen or mouse. It's simple to use but takes care, attention and precision to accurately interpret what the dials and read-outs are telling you. Interpret signals, set headings, and map the ocean through experimentation and intuition.
As you play you discover and catalogue species through observation, scanning, taking samples, and interacting with alien life. Read Ellery’s notes, look at her sketches, and help her classify an entirely new ecosystem. You choose whether to study creatures, investigate secrets or dive into new areas, then come back to your base to study samples in the lab, chat with Ellery or read her journals to understand more about this world.
Through all of this runs the relationship between you and the unseen person whose suit you inhabit. As you help guide her towards a terrible truth, this bond of friendship becomes surprisingly deep.
