Play OverviewPlay Overview

Agar.io (2015) is a traversal and collecting game where you compete with single-cell organisms to grow bigger and survive. To play you simply steer your cell around to collect algae and grow bigger, if you collide with other players, the larger cell consumes the other and grows even bigger.

You control a circular cell in a large Petri dish. The aim is to gain as much mass as possible by consuming small cells and other players. At the same time, you need to avoid getting eaten by players who are larger than you. You start as a single cell but can divide once you are big enough, and control multiple cells.

As you progress you learn to work with the physics of survival. The smaller cells can move faster than the large ones, so your main predators are often those cells that are only slightly bigger than you. Dividing into multiple cells enables you to move quicker and collect more of the food dotted around the level. While you are small you can also hide under the spikey virus cells to avoid being spotted.

The result is an online game that is highly competitive without the common violence and aggression that goes with these experiences. Over time, different strategies and ways to communicate with other players have evolved. For example, dividing near someone else to offer them food is commonly seen as an invitation to team up.
