Play OverviewPlay Overview

Army of Ruin (2022) is an action shooting game where you progressively choose weapons, abilities and upgrades to defeat powerful waves of numerous enemies. Play focuses on precise movements and strategic upgrade choices as your weapons auto-fire at the swarming monsters. It stands out for its fantasy themes and the diverse array of abilities and equipment that you must carefully combine to stay alive.

You take control of a legendary hero and must fight an army of evil minions, generals and bosses in fantasy arenas such as an ancient forest, forge city or hidden shrine. Starting with weak attacks, you'll need to defeat enemies to level up, enabling you to acquire and upgrade new weapons and enhanced abilities, referred to as trinkets. Weapons fire automatically with a cooldown until they can fire again. They range from spears to flying tridents or energy beams. You gain enhancements from Trinkets you collect that offer things like increased attacks when low on health and reduced enemy speed.

As you progress, you can unlock new characters, levels and equipment by completing objectives such as surviving so long or fully upgrading a specific weapon in a single round. Each character has a unique starting weapon and special ability, for example, Saul the wizard has a magical staff and increases attack damage and speed for each active trinket. Through experimentation, you can perfect combining characters with strategic upgrade choices to maximise your damage and ensure victory.

The resulting game combines the combat challenge of managing hundreds of encroaching monsters with the tactical element of choosing how to develop your strengths. When this comes together successfully, it is both satisfying and rewarding.
