Play OverviewPlay Overview

Cocoon (2023) is a puzzle adventure where you play a winged creature transporting orbs through a mysterious world. The twist is that placing orbs in a portal grants access to the worlds within worlds and creates a complex nested puzzle. It stands out for how challenging it is and offers satisfaction for those willing to persist while feeling confused.

Play involves traversing the world-leaping mechanics to decipher a mystery at the heart of the cosmos. Finding and manipulating the orbs are key to progression. Each one has a unique ability that functions as a tool to solve puzzles. In this way, you uncover hidden pathways, fire projectiles and trigger switches. You also need to take on large guardian enemies in challenging battles.

As you progress you discover alien environments and biomechanical devices left behind by an ancient civilisation. This enables you to unlock more ways forward as you journey through industrial structures and massive organic caverns.

The result is a fascinating and super-clever puzzle game. Its linear nature makes it a fit for those who love a rigid puzzle and aren't put off by getting stuck. Those who persevere are rewarded with the satisfaction of solving the intricate layered puzzle.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Cocoon 22 months ago. It was re-examined by Ellen Robertson and updated 3 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for pictures or sounds likely to be scary to young children and mild violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to fantasy or mythical beings and creatures. Violence only occurs during boss fights. Although the protagonist can be attacked by the boss, being hit does not result in any harm. Instead, the player's character is thrown out of the world and has to travel back to the boss. The bosses can be harmed, although violence is unrealistic in nature, as are reactions to it. There is no blood or injury detail. The monsters featured in these boss fights are first encountered in dark rooms, in which they awaken in the background. Both these scenes and the fights themselves feature scary sound effects. Some bosses also feature designs that may scare young children.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE for Mild Fantasy Violence. Players explore worlds within orbs, solve puzzles, and battle the orbs' guardians. Players use small bomb-like plants to defeat enemies; guardians shoot at characters to slow them down. Battles are accompanied by impact sounds and brief cries of pain.

Skill Level

12+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. You need to be able to get around the world and solve the intricately nested puzzle. Resilience and persistence when you are stuck are really important to take on this hard challenge. Being will to look up a guide if you are stuck is another way to ensure you can progress and reduce the skill level.
