Play OverviewPlay Overview

Die in the Dungeon (2021) is a battle game where you defeat enemies using dice with different powers and effects. Play involves placing combinations of dice on a grid, making use of Scrabble-like multipliers and the dice combinations to trigger powerful attacks. This offers a simple premise that grows with your ambition to find complex and inventive combinations to win.

Play involves moving from room to room in a neverending dungeon to defeat the enemies you find. Combat is a turn-based placement of your dice on a grid. Each type of dice has a specific effect, such as dealing damage to an enemy, restoring your health, or blocking incoming damage.

But this is just the start, as it's not only which dice you play but where and when you play them that's important. The different dice types work in tandem to power up neighbouring abilities. Experimenting with different strategies, placements, and combinations is essential as you face off against ever-stronger enemies.

For each room you defeat, you gain a new dice that then expands your options for play. When you are defeated (which happens a lot at the start), you get sent back to the beginning, but keep all your dice from the previous run. This enables you to progress further each time and slowly increase in strength until you can conquer every challenge you face.

The result is a game where typical turn-based move selection is swapped for careful and considered combinations of dice effects. It challenges you to think carefully about your every action, while still remaining fun and engaging.

9+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. The dice help categorise and distinguish between the different types of actions you can do, with the number indicating power, so it's relatively easy to understand. Still, older children will enjoy the nuance and depth of optimising your deck and working out the best ways to use the dice.
