Play OverviewPlay Overview

Shogun Showdown (2023) is a tactical fighting game where you play a Japanese-inspired warrior batting to be ready to face the Shogun. Each run you choose a character and attack cards to work through a series of miniature turn-based battles.

Although the deck-building and turn-based fights are familiar, this is a game like Into The Breach, where precision and planning of these aspects are crucial. You need to carefully position yourself and stack your attacks in the right order to do well. Because you can see what your opponents are going to do in their next move, it becomes a game as much about sequencing and cunning as brute-force attacks.

As you progress you can have the option to pick new attack tiles or upgrade the ones you already have. In this way you build the deck on the current run, as well as unlock cards and characters for your next attempt. You also learn how to use the swap-place skill and combos to further power up your attacking abilities.

The result is a game where you have all the information you need to win each battle. Interpreting this and sequencing your moves and attacks appropriately. This creates an approachable system with considerable depth not unlike the experience of learning a game like chess.

Content Rating

This game has not yet been rated, but we anticipate it is likely to be rated PEGI 7.

Although it's a game where you use a range of weapons to kill enemies, it's not depicted realistically. When enemies die they fall over and disappear. There is, however, still quite a lot of pixilated blood to indicate damage.

Skill Level

9+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. The side-on nature of the game makes the movement decisions simpler, although you do need forward planning to do well. You also need resilience for when you die (which you do often) to try again.

Shogun Showdown usually costs £12.79.
