Play Overview
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a role-playing adventure about a fated hero who must hunt down the dragon that (literally) stole their heart. Play involves traversing the world, interacting with locals and using swords, bows, and magic to defeat huge beasts. It stands out for how other player's champion characters join your game, complete with abilities and knowledge from their other adventures - and the mysterious curse that has the potential to ruin your progress.
It's a single-player narrative game with a focus on real-time action. You create a main and companion Pawn character. They are joined by other player's Pawn characters who offer not only abilities but knowledge about the world. In this way, you decide how to approach different situations and level up your characters.
As you venture beyond the safe borders of your town, you encounter diverse monsters and decide between engaging in battles or finding alternatives. You learn to adjust your party’s setup, use the surrounding terrain, and choose which monsters you take on. There are also travellers, merchants, soldiers and other characters in the world, all going about their daily lives.
The result is a Dungeons & Dragons style role-play with a focus on whacky computer characters, unexpected interactions and relatively simple combat. It balances the open world feel with a relatively directed story full of secrets to discover and items to wield. On top of this is the mysterious Dragon's Bane infection that players are never directly told about, but that can wreak havoc in the world and limit their adventuring options.
