Play Overview
For The King (2018) is a strategy game where you play an adventurer bringing peace to the kingdom of Fahrul. It's like a tabletop board game, with rewards and hits determined by dice rolls, but combines this with more traditional video game fights. You gather a party of heroes to explore the world, take on dungeon adventures and gain equipment and experience.
For The King is an unusual blend of play. It's turn-based, meaning you, other players, and enemies take turns to move and attack. You choose which sort of attacks to attempt or bring in special focused moves. Each play through, the maps, quests and world events are different. It's a challenge to see how far you get, although eventually you will die and start again.
Also unusual is the ability to split up your party. This enables you to search larger areas but means not everyone will be able to help if you encounter a fight. You also need to carefully work on gaining better weapons and upgrading your abilities.
The cooperative play, along with the simple weapon-slot battle system makes it accessible to players new to role-play and strategy games. Some patience is needed early on while you learn the ropes, perseverance enables you to progress well. You can also gather herbs to heal wounds or set up safe camps or brave the horrors that nightfall brings.
