Play OverviewPlay Overview

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened (2023) is an online role-play game where you play a new student at Hogwarts. As you explore you battle other players, using cards to activate spells while dodging attacks from your opponent. Unlike many large online adventures, these battle encounters offer a surprising level of depth alongside a large number of non-player characters and missions. A great Harry Potter experience for those that can resist the drive to the optional purchases

Set several years after The Deathly Hallows but featuring flashbacks to the events of the books, you play a young student who's just enrolled at Hogwarts, ready to start their magical journey. As you meet characters familiar and new, you make friends and learn new spells to use in magical combat against monsters and human opponents in grand tournaments.

Play involves exploring iconic locations, from Hogwarts to Diagon Alley to the grand castle. Along the way you talk to the people you meet who offer you combat missions. In battle, you use an assortment of cards to perform magical abilities and launch attacks at your opponent. Unusually, you can also move about the arena freely at the same time to dodge incoming attacks and line yourself up to deal maximum damage. As you progress, you unlock (or buy through loot boxes) new cards to add to your deck.

Alongside the single-player content, there's a strong focus on playing with friends. You can join Social Clubs with other real players and compete against the other clubs to rank highest, achieved by winning the most matches against other players. Being successful here requires coordination and teamwork between Club members and yields helpful cards and rewards, although to be among the best does require you to spend money to unlock the best cards.

The result is a game that combines strategic card-based combat with multiplayer competition and teamwork. Whether you choose to focus on the single-player aspects or engage with Social Clubs and fierce rankings, the amount of cards to collect and things to do makes it a unique and surprisingly deep experience.

Skill Level

12+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it’s important for parents and guardians to ensure they understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. The battles play out in real-time and require expert strategy when it comes to playing your cards at the best times. You also simultaneously need to be moving and reacting to what your opponent does. There's quite some complexity to the different cards on offer.

This game is free to play, but there are other costs associated with this game:
  • In-Game Loot Boxes: Additional in-game purchases are offered for items that enhance the experience. These include in-game purchases of random items (known as 'loot boxes') that offer a chance of getting rare/higher-value items although common/lower-value items are more frequent.
  • In-Game Pass: Purchase a season/battle pass to gain access to limited in-game purchases, reward items and other aspects of the game.

You can pay a monthly fee and receive extra rewards and cards for your deck. You can also buy in-game currency you can use to buy loot boxes yielding new cards, although getting really good cards is very rare. While you can unlock some of this currency for free by playing the game, it's designed in such a way that if you want to get the best cards and stay very competitive against the best players you need to spend considerable sums of money. That said, you can play through single-player fights and experience everything the game has to offer without paying.
