Play OverviewPlay Overview

Kana Quest (2020) is a puzzle game that teaches you how to read Japanese Katakana and Hiragana (a phonetic lettering system that's one component of the Japanese writing system). The puzzles are a grid of different Kana and Hiragana characters that you aim to move next to other characters with share a pronunciation sound. As you move the tile they make the sounds for you, so that as you play you learn what each character sounds like.

In this way you work to clear the puzzle boards. For example, a Ka and a Na would connect as they both have an "a" sound. When all Kana in a level are connected by matches, it's complete. The simple idea adds complexity as you progress with over 300 challenging levels. Some puzzles require figuring out the correct order of Hiragana. And others require the player to figure out the pronunciation of a Hiragana by looking at what connects with what.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Kana Quest 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 21 months ago.
