Play OverviewPlay Overview

Kid Icarus Uprising (2012) is a shooting-adventure game set in a world loosely drawn from Greek mythology. You play as angelic warrior, Pit, on a mission to save humanity via airborne shooting and ground-based third-person exploration. It stands out for the level of weapon customisation and nuanced stylus controls to offer a challenging shooter on the diminutive 3DS system.

Uprising has a prestigious heritage that hints at its somewhat unexpected success - being created by Masahiro Sakurai at the behest of Satoru Iwata (Kirby, Smash Bros.) to create a 3DS launch title. You control Pit's movement and shooting, during his missions for Palutena, the Goddess of Light. Play switches between aerial-based on-rails shooting, and ground-based exploration.

To progress you can determine the game's difficulty by how many hearts you bet on the upcoming mission. The more you lay down, the harder the level, but the greater the rewards. You mitigate the more challenging levels by collecting and crafting a wide range of weapons. Each has unique advantages and disadvantages and can be fused to create combinations.

The result is a game with a number of related mechanics. These can seem dense and confusing at first but work together to invite creative combinations of weapons and flexible approaches to progression. Add to this its memorable characters and lighthearted story moments and you have a game that feels surprisingly close to a console shooting experience.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for violence.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes. As players run, jump, and fly through colorful levels, they use swords and energy bursts to defeat fantasy creatures (e.g., one-eyed blobs, giant snakes, mythical creatures). Players can engage in ranged and melee-style combat, sometimes using crosshair targets to shoot down enemies. Combat includes brief explosions, cries of pain, and slashing sounds. During the course of the game, one female character wears a tight outfit that accentuates her cleavage/buttocks. Some scenes also reference suggestive material (e.g., “You better not be thinking of anything . . . naughty” and “Someone's overcompensating.”/“Feeling a little inadequate, Virindi?”). The dialogue contains brief references to bathroom humor: “This environment is actually pretty cute. Especially when you compare it to his . . . bowels” and “Well, there's more than one way to get rid of a bad chicken nugget. Maybe I should just expel you from my body the old-fashioned way.”

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. You need quick reactions and a good tactical sense of dodging and moving around the available space.
