Play OverviewPlay Overview

Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga (2022) is a strategy battle game where you build an army to take on rebel forces. Play draws on Fire Emblem's tactical turn-based battles, here though, you choose and arrange units into battalions more like Advance Wars. This makes the game stand out with fresh tactics that require you to not only select good combinations of units but also arrange them intelligently in the battalion grid.

Set in a fantasy continent where a shattered empire has only recently been calmed by the new Empress, you play a young academy graduate just starting your military career. When the Empress is abducted by a rogue general, you set out on a mission to assemble an army, bring the rebel army to justice, and restore peace. As you build your forces and grow your reputation, you meet characters belonging to the various factions within the empire and make choices that will shape your journey.

Play involves constructing the battalions of your army and then using them in grid-based, turn-based combat. When a battalion is near an enemy force, you can engage them in combat that progresses automatically, where the positioning and types of troops decide the outcome. Tough shielded units can be out in front, while ranged units are better at the back of the block.

If you crush an enemy's morale, they surrender to you, or you can defeat them outright. In between fights, you can change the arrangement and setup of troops within your battalions and apply items that upgrade specific stats. You also talk to characters, forming relationships that can develop into alliances or bitter feuds that affect the challenge you face.

The result is a game that innovates the well-worn tactics genre by combining elements from different games. The positional importance of each unit in a battalion and the strategic movement on the battlefield add layers of warfare nuance and fresh ways to win.
