Play Overview
Subpar Pool (2023) is a whimsical sports game that combines golf and pool. You take on a series of pool table challenges, aiming to clear each one below a set number of shots. It stands out not only for the unusual twist on pool but how the idea is extended with all manner of customisations.
Each hole is like a pool table, with different shapes, types of balls and other unexpected quirks. You use one stick to position the ball and the other to aim. It's a challenge of planning and thinking ahead that always shows you where your ball will go before you hit it.
As you progress you work through four different worlds with different obstacles, hazards and challenges. Each time you play, the tables are freshly generated which means it's always different. You can also earn 18 different cards that introduce new rules that either help or hinder. How about a ball that homes in on the cueball? Or why not add a huge ball that moves really slowly? Then there's the card that adds a ball that splits in two, or another one that adds a ball that shatters. Particularly funny is the card that adds more balls.
The result is a welcoming game that creates a fresh tactile take on pool. Being able to change the rules of the game with the cards makes it great fun for families and offers a nice route to thinking about how games are made.
