Play Overview
Friday Night Funkin' (2020) (also known as FNF) is a free rhythm game where you press buttons in time with music tracks like the classic Dance Dance Revolution machines found in the 1990s arcade. It's simple, silly, retro fun and has become hugely popular for its fan-made feel - which does mean parents should review content before younger children play.
You play as a Boyfriend who must defeat a variety of characters in singing and rapping contests to earn dates with his girlfriend. You do this by completing rhythm challenges to press the Cursor Buttons in time with the music. Things start slowly but soon ramp up to be really quick.
The rhythm action is broken into two turns. First, your opponent will sing a pattern of notes and then you must do the same. Some songs introduce more complicated sequences and surprise variance from the order of notes.
It's a simple game that has become popular with a wide range of players. Its visual style and song names are aimed at an older audience. These include songs with titles such as Getting Freaky, Satin Panties, MILF. Together with the scantily clad characters it gives the game an underground club vibe.
The game was initially created for a game jam and is playable on a website, but a Kickstarter for Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game raised over two million dollars and a PC version of the game is being made. There's also an unofficial version on Roblox called Friday Night Bloxxin'.

At the time of writing the web version of the game included song titles: Gettin Freaky, Satin Panties, High and MILF. Dialogue included phrases like "We should just kill you, but what the hell, it's been a boring day," and "Ah, look who it is! Your sexually ambiguous, angry little friend! Don't you have a school to shoot up? There's one way to settle this. Let's rock, ya little c@$t! Heh heh heh heh heh... Ya little c@$ts!"
Some of the animations in Week 7 content includes characters being shot in the head through a helmet and in the chest with splatters of blood.
There is a setting to turn off "Naughties". This removes the swear for the voice lines in recent songs for Week 7 and later. Currently does not remove words like "s*!t" from previous Weeks. It also replaces the blood in the Stress song with blue sparks.
The game also has a variety of modified versions available from its website. This takes the experience, story and dialogue in different directions, not all of which are suitable for young players.
