Play Overview
Land Above Sea Below (2023) is a calm landscape-building puzzle game where you raise an island out of the sea to keep the flora and fauna above water. You work to increase your island’s area and height by placing tiles one after one.
Play involves strategically placing tiles to create new land or raise up existing elements. You start with one tile, on which the Last Tree of Fall grows. Your goal is to keep this tree alive as long as possible, by avoiding its tile getting swallowed by the sea. You do this by placing tiles next to each other, one after one. As you do this you score points and
As you progress you realise that placing matching tiles next to each other doesn't just raise that location but the height of your island overall. As new landscapes and terrain types are unlocked you can create a more diverse ecosystem.
What starts as a calming zen experience gently adds strategy. You can rotate tiles to achieve the perfect combination of vegetation but also need to keep an eye on how you place the special tiles (road, river, wall) to affect the further growth of your island. The result is a game that's both relaxing and challenging to play.
