Play OverviewPlay Overview

Qomp (2020) is a bat and ball game with a difference. You control the ball rather than the bat and only use a single button to switch the direction of your ball character. With this single ability, you take on bosses, solve puzzles and overcome platforming challenges. As you progress new interactions and game mechanics develop with new obstacles and hidden doors.

Trapped in between paddles for decades, you finally escape and start an adventure through a maze of dungeons. "Now it is time to take matters into your own hands and try to escape this endless torment." Although it's a simple game, the developers talk about it as a meditation on freedom in three parts - first, you think you are free, then you realise your freedom has a price and finally, you change your idea of freedom altogether.

The result is an ingenious game that creates a challenging and approachable platform experience with a single button. It resists the temptation to dilute this vision and sticks to its task throughout. It's a platform game about combining limited movement with an awareness of your environment.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Qomp 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 11 months ago.
