Play OverviewPlay Overview

Storybook Brawl (2021) is a fighting card game where you choose a unique hero to lead an expanding team of storybook characters in a short 8-player tournaments. Recruit and upgrade a characters from your favourite stories and fairy tales that take advantage of your hero's unique power. It's unusual not only for leveraging these often overlooked fairy tale heroes but the focus on strategic team building team and positioning for battle.

Play alternates between recruitment and battling. At the start of the game and between each battle you get to add, upgrade, or replace character cards on your team, cast magic spells, move your characters around, and gain powerful treasures. During battles your team automatically fight your opposing heroes team while you watch and cheer your team on (or cry in defeat).

Your hero gets stronger after every battle and can recruit stronger characters. This gives you the chance to replace characters with stronger ones as the competition gets tougher. Recruiting and adapting your combination of characters and treasures, finding the best fighting positions for your team, and using spells at the right time are the keys to victory.

Storybook Brawl is a really approachable card-based battler game that is easy to learn and play, and offers a lot of strategy and depth as you delve into it. One interesting thing that helps keep the game fun and fresh while making it easier to learn and remember what cards do is the way in which familiar stories and characters are portrayed through gameplay. Using narrative connections can help strengthen your team, like Princes and Princesses that work well together. Some of the most thematic and fun cards are powerful combos like Romeo and Juliet, which retell their story in a clever way. For example, if Romeo dies and Juliet is already dead, then she comes back to life.
