Play OverviewPlay Overview

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (2021) is an action role-play game where you play a Turnip working hard to pay off a massive tax bill to Mayor Onion. The setup soon gives way to a series of Zelda-style quests, dungeons and puzzles that earn new items and abilities.

You explore as Turnip Boy using your soil sword and watering can. The sword lets you fend off attacks from snails, piglets, and such-like. The watering can enable you to grow bombs, doors and portals.

The real novelty is the game's tongue-in-cheek story. You interact with all sorts of quick-quipping fruit and vegetables who are both well-written and endearing. This ensures the game trundles along at a pleasant pace. Things do get more difficult, but this is balanced with more weapons and abilities.

It's all good fun, while it deftly asks questions about taxation while you discover a surprisingly deep history of the world. As you progress you find loads of tax documents to rip up, allowing you to erase your paper trail and potentially destroy the government. How the game ends depends on how effectively you commit tax evasion.

It's a great fun game that is accessible for young and new players while offering parents some entertaining quips and commentary about the state of the world (and the inordinate amount of time we spend online).

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for Mild violence.
Violence consists of the player attacking enemies using a wooden sword. Enemies generally flicker when hit and then disappear in a cloud of smoke when defeated. There is a boss battle at the end of each dungeon level. Most of the bosses are oversized animals. However, one battle involves a mutated human-like character with burning eyes, whose appearance may scare younger children.
