Bioshock Infinite (2013) is an adventure shooting game. Although the story is unconnected to the previous games in the series, it raises similar themes of dictatorship communities and alternative to capitalistic society. It's another nuanced and complex story with a steampunk aesthetic, but turns from the body horror of the previous games to considering the fine line between protection and imprisonment in broken relationships.
The year is 1912. You play as Booker DeWitt, a private investigator hired to find a girl called Elizabeth in the mysterious floating city of Columbia. Founded by a religious sect led by a prophet, you and Elizabeth uncover a tale of rebellion, fanaticism, time travel and multi-dimensions.
Like previous Bioshock games you can gain super powers (this time called Vigors) that alter your physical form. Special powers include electric shocks, attacking crows, and bullet shields. You also have access to more standard weaponry such as shotguns and machine guns. New to the series are the Skylines, a transportation device which acts like zip-lines for travelling at high speed around the city. Also, Elizabeth has the ability to create tears in the fabric of reality and can pull objects from other dimensions such as ammunition and automated turrets to help you defeat enemy attacks.
The games in the series are available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch either as original releases or in a variety of remastered packs:
Bioshock 2 (2010)
BioShock: Ultimate Rapture Edition (2012) BioShock and BioShock 2
Bioshock Infinite (2013)
BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea (2014)
BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition (2014) Main game and extra content.
BioShock: The Collection (2020) HD version of all games on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Switch
Bioshock Infinite divides the fans of the franchise as it departed from the previous games location and mechanics (to some extent). For those interested in a mind bending story, who can complete the difficult final battle it has a lot to offer.
