Play Overview
Inua - A Story in Ice and Time (2022) is a narrative-driven role-playing game where you switch between 3 different time periods, alter people's memories and thoughts, and change both the past and the future. In the far Canadian north, you meet three groups of people, apart in time but intertwined in thought, and work to save a mystical polar bear. With deep musings on the natural world and an involving story and gameplay mechanics, it's a unique and unusual game.
The game is created by the developers of Bury Me My Love and Vignettes, adapted from an original story by Nathalie Frassoni and Frédéric Bouvier in collaboration with Inuit author Thomassie Mangiok and consultants Billy Gauthier and Monica Ittusardjuat.
10,000 years in the past, you join a group of hunters, wishing to assert their dominance over the natural order. They hunt and kill an ancient polar bear, Nanurluk, who was protecting her cubs. This brutal act carried out due to ambition and greed, upsets the natural balance of things, and it's up to you to restore it by implanting ideas and thoughts in the minds of people both past and present.
You play three different people, Taïna, Peter and Simon, who are separated by over a century in time. As you progress through the story you play each character, in the same location but in different eras. You switch back and forth, implanting memories, thoughts and ideas, and solving puzzles, that alter events for the characters. In this way, you uncover secrets and change the course of history.
The game features a unique, simplistic art style, and events from both an historical and fictional past that intertwine to tell a unique and engaging story, that can teach us about the real-life events of the 19th-century Franklin expedition, and also offer a unique perspective on nature, that natural world and our moral responsibility to protect it.
