Octogeddon (2018) is a shooting game where you play a massive mutant octopus out to destroy the world.
You can only fend off attackers by rotating left or right to use your bizarrely weaponised arms to destroy them before they hit you. Like the developer's other game Plants Vs Zombies, it's strikingly silly and playful and offers a slow-paced and tactical challenge as you work to gain new arms and defeat the next boss.
You play Octogeddon, a huge angry octopus that can grow tentacles and evolve each of them into deadly weapons until you become the ultimate eight-legged killing machine. Things are kept simple on each run, as all you can do is rotate on the spot, but through repeated attempts, you discover a wide range of ways to customise yourself for your next run.
As you progress, you collect shells that can be used to upgrade or unlock new arms and abilities for the next run. Selecting how you equip yourself for the next run needs to consider the different boss battles you encounter. Combining the right appendages to defend yourself and attack these larger enemies becomes a big part of playing just one more time.
Perhaps you'll include the penguin tentacle to freeze enemies. Or how about a rooster arm that fires slow-moving, explosive eggs? Then there's the cobra arm that rapidly shoots venom. There's even a queen bea arm that fires homing bees. The choices are hilarious and wide-ranging. But most important is working out how they combine to be most effective.
The result is a game that's super simple to control and play but offers considerable depth in equipping your octopus. It's silly in all the right ways and perfect for younger players looking to get into shooting games for the first time (or anyone looking for a fun distraction).
