Review

Wii Play (2006) is a collection of multi-player party games originally designed for the Nintendo Wii and its motion controller.

Play varies from game to game but each focuses on a motion interaction. The games are mostly short experiences for multiple players. Some of the games stand out and are still avidly played by people years later: Tanks, Find Mii and Fishing. There are also some stand-out imaginative uses of the Wii controller: Spooky Search and Cone Zone.

Wii-Play games:

• Shooting Range: Like Duck Hunt, you work through consecutive rounds of aiming with the Wii Remote as objects appear on the screen.
• Find Mii: An observation challenge where you work to spot your Mii cartoon character in a crowd.
• Table Tennis: Table tennis, although not as detailed as the Wii Sports Resort version.
• Pose Mii: Press a button to pose your character then rotate the controller to line them up with a silhouette.
• Laser Hockey: An air hockey game similar to Pong.
• Billiards: A simplified nine-ball game of pool, using the Wii Remote like the cue.
• Fishing: Use the Wii Remote as a fishing rod and time your motion to snag the biggest fish.
• Charge: Cow racing where you need to manage how fast your cow goes to win the race.
• Tanks: A surprisingly detailed top-down combat for four players. Aiming by pointing the Wii Remote, moving with the Stick.

Wii Play: Motion games:

• Cone Zone: Use the Wii Remote like an ice cream cone, trying to balance more and more scoops on top.
• Veggie Guardin: Whack moles with the Wii Remote as they attempt to steal your vegetables.
• Skip Skimmer: Use the Wii Remote to angle and motion a stone. Release the button to make it skip across a lake.
• Pose Mii Plus: A more advanced version of this game with additional poses.
• Trigger Twist: Like Shooting Range, but with more shooting targets, UFOs, ninjas and dinosaurs.
• Jump Park: Bounce your Mii character off the walls and floor to collect gems.
• Teeter Targets: Hit targets by controlling rotating flippers to bounce a ball
• Spooky Search: Find the ghosts hiding around the room by pointing the Wii Remote and using the sound and vibration to home in.
• Wind Runner: Race your Mii character on roller skates by angling an umbrella to catch the wind with your Wii Remote.
• Treasure Twirl: Try and unwind an umbilical cable to ensure your diver can explore the ocean.
• Flutter Fly: Use the Wii Remote to control an on-screen leaf like a fan to blow a group of balloons through an obstacle course.
• Star Shuttle: Assemble a space station controlling a small rocket with the Wii Remote.
• Dolphin: Guide a dolphin through a series of rings.
• Unicycle: Ride a unicycle along a raised obstacle course.
