The Ni no Kuni Franchise

Ni no Kuni is a series of adventure video games where you play a young character with an important mission. The first games follow Oliver, and his journey to another world to save his mother. The sequel, Revenant Kingdom, follows Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum, a boy king who is usurped from his castle and sets out to reclaim his kingdom. Play is similar across both games; you explore a fantasy world, meet colourful characters, and fight off villains and monsters, but each game adds a unique spin and features vastly different stories, but retain a whimsical, uncynical feel. They stand out for offering a role-play experience that is both approachable and of high production value for a wider audience than usually plays these sorts of games. Studio Ghibli's animation and character work establish their believability and complexity while the soundtrack extends the feature film feel.

The games were developed separately, but follow a similar heroes' quest form:

  • Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn (2010) on Nintendo DS and then updated for PlayStation 3.
  • Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (2013), a significantly expanded version of the previous game, on PlayStation 3 and later remastered for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
  • Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (2018) on PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch
